Ingredients:
- 6 cups Granny Smith apples (approx. 5-6 large), peeled, cored, and sliced into 1/4-inch wedges
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1/3 cup granulated sugar
- 1.5 tbsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1 cup high-quality salted caramel sauce
- 1 box (15.25 oz) Yellow Cake Mix
- 1 cup unsalted butter, frozen for 30 minutes
- 1/2 cup pecans, roughly chopped
- 1/4 tsp sea salt
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a large mixing bowl, toss the 6 cups of sliced apples with 1 tbsp lemon juice, 1/3 cup sugar, 1.5 tbsp cinnamon, and 1/2 tsp nutmeg. Let them sit for 10 minutes. Note: This creates the syrup needed to hydrate the bottom of the cake.
- Pour the apples and all that glorious accumulated juice into an ungreased 9x13-inch baking dish, spreading them into an even layer.
- Drizzle the 1 cup of salted caramel sauce evenly over the top of the spiced apples until the fruit is mostly covered.
- Sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix evenly over the caramel and apple layers. Ensure the surface is level, but do not stir the ingredients.
- Using your chilled box grater, grate the 1 cup of frozen butter over the top of the cake mix. Note: Aim for full coverage to prevent dry, floury spots.
- Sprinkle the 1/2 cup of chopped pecans and 1/4 tsp sea salt over the butter layer until evenly distributed.
- Place the dish in the center of the oven and bake for 45 minutes.
- Watch for the top to turn mahogany colored and for the filling to be bubbling vigorously at the edges.
- Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 15 minutes. This is crucial for the caramel to thicken.
- Serve warm, ideally with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream that will melt into the crevices.
